A Very Egg-citing Project
Over the past month, the Otter Class has been working with Farmer John from Nore Valley Farm. Their project started in the middle of April, when Farmer John dropped seven eggs and an incubator to the Otter classroom. For three weeks, the Otter class minded the eggs and made sure that the incubator was safe and had a little bit of water inside. On Wednesday the 8th of May, there was great excitement when the class noticed that the eggs were starting to crack. Five chicks had pipped (cracked a small hole) and were working hard to get out. When the Otter's came in on Thursday morning, they were delighted to see that five chicks had hatched out! Once the chicks were dry and looked strong, they moved out of the incubator and into the brood box. The children made sure that the chicks had enough food and water to grow big and strong over the next week. Other classes in the school came to visit the chicks and everybody enjoyed watching them and getting to know them. The Otter's worked together and named the chicks Mustard, Ginger, Chickpea, Berry and Brownie. After one week with us, Farmer John came and collected the chicks to return them to the farm. What an egg-cellent learning experience! |
