Swimming in the 2017/18 school year
All children in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th classes will go swimming in the 3rd term of the school year.
Lessons will start on Friday 13th April and will continue every Friday for 8 weeks, up to Friday 8th June.
While swimming is usually for 1st to 4th classes only, the children in the current 5th class did not get to go swimming when they were in 1st and 2nd class as the school was too small back then to make it affordable. Also, with only one 4th class this year, we have the space to include 5th class this year. Therefore, we are including 5th class this year, for one year only.
Parents are not permitted access to the changing rooms. If you have a concern that your child will have difficulty drying, dressing or undressing him/herself, you now have almost 6 months to develop those skills. Make sure that your child is undressing him/herself for bed at night and for their bath or shower. Encourage your child to dry themselves after their bath or shower and to dress themselves again. Long hair takes particular care - now is the time for your child to learn how to manage their wet hair. If you are going away for a night or even packing a bag for a day out, encourage your child to pack and unpack for themselves. These are important life skills.
If your child does not have a swim suit, now is the time to buy one.
If you have any concerns in relation to your child going swimming, please address them with the class teacher well in advance of swimming starting, preferably before the end of 2017. This will allow us all to work together on a plan to get you and your child ready to take part in this important part of their learning at school.

Swimming as part of the PE curriculum
The Board of Management of Citywest ETNS recognises the importance of education in water safety and the priority given to the strand of Aquatics in the Physical Education curriculum. Water safety continues to be a key issue in Ireland today. With water-related deaths representing a significant proportion of fatalities in Ireland each year (In 2013, 91 people died by drowning in the Republic of Ireland), Citywest ETNS is committed to developing a thorough water safety and aquatics programme.
Aims/Purposes
1.To comply with the requirements of the Revised Curriculum in aquatics
2.To ensure child protection and the dignity of children in a vulnerable situation
3.To provide clarity of rules and responsibilities
Procedures and Guidelines
·Each pupil will attend a term of swimming lessons annually from First to Fourth Class.
·Costs incurred by hiring of pool, transport to and from pool and payment of instructors necessitate a charge being imposed on each pupil. This will be included on the book list, for payment in June in advance of the academic year. Inability to pay will not preclude a pupil from participating fully in swimming classes.
·A pupil who needs to opt out of a swimming class for a medical reason should provide a note of excuse, written and signed by the parent or guardian. A medical cert will be required if there is a medical condition which precludes the child from swimming on a long-term basis. It is the policy of the school that all pupils attend swimming lessons unless exempted by a doctor.
·All children attending swimming should wear clothing which they can manage themselves. Swimming togs may be worn under clothing coming to school. Each child must have a suitable bag to carry his/her swimming gear such as a sports bag or similar type of bag with a secure zip or other fastening.
·Generally, children who do not have special needs will have sufficiently developed personal care skills to manage changing/dressing with ease. Children with special needs and who have been granted access to a Special Needs Assistant (SNA) will be assisted by the SNA.
·All items brought to the pool must be clearly labelled with the child’s name. This includes the bag, tracksuit, socks, underwear and shoes.
·Each child must have their own togs, arm bands if required, towel, hair brush (if necessary) and swim cap, all of which must also be marked.
·No toiletries (e.g. shampoo, shower gel, deodorant) are permitted. Hairdryers are not permitted.
·While in the pool, pupils must endeavour to obey the instructor’s orders at all times and comply with the School Code of Conduct.
·Teachers will remain on the viewing deck during the lesson in order to supervise the overall group and pupils who may need to use the toilets during the lesson.
