Dear Parents/ Guardians,

As you know, we at Citywest ETNS take pride in incorporating digital learning into the educational landscape. As a new school, we have not yet built up the resources to allow an entire class to work on individual computers at the same time. Other schools in similar situations have tackled this problem by hosting BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) days. We would now like to investigate this option, which would allow students to use their own personal technology devices for educational use while at school.

To this end, we are considering a trial BYOD day.  Children in First Class would have the opportunity to bring their own mobile computing devices to school for use in a Digital Art lesson, to coincide with Digital Art Week.  There would be no internet connection and the children would only open a paint programme. Should this experiment be successful, we would be able to consider expanding BYOD days to allow children to type, create presentations, carry out research, etc.

On a BYOD day, children would be allowed to bring their school bag into the classroom for the entire day to better ensure the security of their device, however, the school cannot ultimately accept responsibility for any damaged, lost or stolen equipment.

We would like to gauge the feasibility of this BYOD proposal. Please indicate your willingness to participate in this pilot programme by completing the checklist below. We would be grateful if you would return the form even if you are not prepared to allow your child to bring a device to school.

1. I would allow my child to bring a fully-charged mobile computing device to school

(e.g. laptop, macbook, netbook, tablet. Please note chargers should not be sent to school)

I would not allow my child to bring a mobile computing device to school

2. The device my child would bring is a

Personal Computer (eg. laptop). Please indicate whether Windows/Apple/Other/Don’t Know __________

Tablet. Please indicate whether Windows/Apple/Other/Don’t Know __________

3. The device my child would bring is loaded with a basic Paint programme such as Microsoft Paint/ Apple Paintbrush/ any free painting app for tablets.

Should this day be a success, we will be in touch again with a view to further developing the BYOD model in the school. We are excited about the possibilities this would open to us and hope that you will be able to support us in this.

Kind regards,

Aoife & Caitríona
