This page is one of a suite of pages to support families learning at home during Covid-19. We hope this page helps you to learn new words and phrases in Irish Sign Language.
Irish Sign Language
We use a lot of ISL (Irish Sign Language) at our school. Caitriona shows us new signs at whole-school assembly each week. For three weeks during school closures due to Covid-19, Caitriona used this page to show you 20 videos on how to sign:
First up is Well-being Fortnight. We hope you enjoy it!
If you would like to continue with ISL, here are some ideas for you:
*Disclaimer: I am neither an ISL interpreter nor an ISL teacher. I know some ISL and use it to increase the visibility of ISL in our school community. I may get some signs wrong. If you want to learn ISL, I recommend going to a proper ISL class. This is just a taster to get children aware, interested and making an effort with those in our community who use ISL.

If you would like to continue with ISL, here are some ideas for you:
- look back over the videos below
- tell longer stories using the signs you already know
- watch the ISL version of The School Hub or any programme that includes ISL
- try the ISL activities suggested by The School Hub; if you're looking for a real challenge, try the version as Gaeilge!
- record a video of you using ISL and send it to me using the form below

27th April to 1st May - Me and My Family
Oh my goodness, I am SO excited to hear that The School Hub are taking a leaf out of our book and will be teaching Irish Sign Language this week! Set your alarm for 11am on Thursday morning and tune in to RTE2 to see Laura O'Grady teach children how to spell their names in ISL. I expect it will be in the middle section of the programme. Here is my video of the alphabet in case you'd like to practice in advance. You could also look at my videos from last week where I tested you on spelling each day!
Here are the posters* that RTE shared for this segment - one from the Irish Deaf Society and two from Laura O'Grady. The episode is linked here.

Happy Monday! I would love to hear from you. Send me a message to let me know how you are doing!
Can you use sign language to say who is in your family and what their names are?
That's a big challenge!

Happy Wednesday! Here is my video for today. I also pulled up the second bonus video I recorded before spring break, revising numbers - it might be helpful for you today! ;-)
Remember: Irish Sign Language will be taught on The School Hub tomorrow, Thursday. The programme starts at 11am. I think ISL will start around 11.15 but I'm not sure. I hope you tune in!
(Don't worry - it will be available online afterwards so will be there to look back at if you don't get to watch it on the day. :-) )

Message from Caitriona on 4th May:
Oops, I feel like a right silly billy. I got up early on Thursday and recorded my video before starting my meetings for the day. Turns out, I forgot to upload it here! Sorry!

Happy Friday! Today I recorded a second video to help adults sign about their families, including some words that children won't need. I hope it helps.
I also made a Maths mistake in my video. Oops! Can you spot it?!

20th to 24th April - Colours
Hi everyone! Welcome back to Term 3!
This week we are signing colours. I was a bit late making the video today so everyone in my house was up and had their school work done by the time I recorded - you can hear my children having a disco in the garden in the background of the video! Its a lovely day and I hope you get some time outside as well, as long as its safe for you to do that and you do it in a safe way. Have a great afternoon!

Happy Tuesday!
As I was recording today, my daughter was watching me, eating her breakfast and guessing the letters and colours. She got a bit loud during the second colour and I was afraid she would give the game away - you can see me put out my hand to stop her from doing that. I expect a lot of you are - like her - having to be quiet when you don't want to be and missing your parents giving you their attention when they have to work at home. I hope you are all doing ok with that and letting your parents work when they have to work. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?! We can do this! Have a great day!

It's Wednesday! Can you guess today's colours?
It's Thursday! This week, I am finger-spelling each word before I show you the sign for it. This is a good chance to practice your letters and to see can you guess what each word is. If you are finding that difficult and you would like to get better at it, scroll down to watch the extra video I made just before spring break revising the letters of the alphabet. If you're not ready for the letters of the alphabet, no problem. Just focus on the colours. Have a happy and kind day! Love from Caitriona.
It's Friday! We now have 10 colours to use in our ISL conversations. What sentences can you make with them? I would love to hear from you and to see how you are getting on with your ISL. Scroll up to send me a message! Have a great weekend.
