Why is sleep so important?

Getting your kids to bed early has more benefits than just a few hours of quiet time at night. New research explains how vitamin ZZZ may help children fight obesity, avoid colds, and succeed in school. The information below was researched by Judith Owens, M.D., director of sleep medicine at Children's National Medical Center, in Washington, D.C and makes for very interesting reading.

Sleep increases kids' attention span.

Children who consistently sleep fewer than ten hours a night before age 3 are three times more likely to have hyperactivity .

Sleep promotes growth.
You've probably had mornings where you've sworn your baby got bigger overnight, and you'd be right. "Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep," says Judith Owen.

Sleep promotes learning.
Sleep aids learning in kids of all ages, and education experts are finding that naps have a particular magic. Neuroscientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst taught a group of 40 preschoolers a game similar to Memory. Then the kids took a nap (averaging 77 minutes) one week and stayed awake the other week. When they stayed awake they forgot 15 percent of what they'd learned, but when they napped they retained everything. The kids scored better on the game not only after they'd just woken up but the next day too.

Sleep reduces injury risk.
Kids are clumsier and more impulsive when they don't get enough sleep, setting them up for accidents. One study of Chinese children found those who were short sleepers (i.e., fewer than nine hours per night for school-age children) were far more likely to have injuries that demanded medical attention. And 91 percent of kids who had two or more injuries in a 12-month period got fewer than nine hours of sleep per night.

There is a sport for everyone

Spring time has arrived and the evenings are getting that little brighter. What better way to spend those brighter evenings than playing a sport that you love! In encouraging every child to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day this photograph will hopefully offer a variety of sport and exercise to suit every child. Just like us adults, every child will have a favourite sport or past time that they love. I hope this photo will give you some ideas of the variety of sport and physical activity that children can enjoy. There really is something for everyone, we just need to help our children find it!

Lack of physical activity among girls leading to poor mental health and low aspirations, warn experts

This information was taken from a research study in the UK and it makes for very interesting reading regarding gender difference in physical activity levels. New figures show boys aged between eight and 15 spend almost twice as much time doing sport activities as girls of same age. The study also revealed that girls spend an average of 25 minutes a day on sports activities, compared with 40 minutes for boys. The study also revealed that the biggest drop-off in girls participating in sports activities occurs during the transition from primary to secondary school, with disruption to friendship groups and declining body confidence affecting girls’ participation in PE and sport. The study really highlights the importance to finding a sport or exercise that both boys and girls can enjoy, because we know that children play sport for two main reasons, friendship and fun.
