25th to 29th May - Are you ready for Sports Day?!

22/5/2020

Two really interesting topics for us all this week!
The first is a section on climate change, which is on Tuesday - all the children who took part in our march for climate action earlier in the year will be interested in this!

Second is Home School Hub's Sports Day on Friday! They are practising some skills on Thursday to be ready so join in both days!

1st Class
You are covering Eadai (Clothes) in Gaeilge this week so you might enjoy this episode where Home School Hub did Eadai too! Here's their activity to match.

3rd Class
This week you are looking at the counties of Ireland. Home School Hub have covered this in different episodes, province by province:
  • Leinster and activity for Leinster
  • Munster and activity for Munster
  • Connacht and activity for Connacht
  • Ulster and activity for Ulster

4th Class
In case you missed the episode on Area and Perimeter last week, here is the link for the episode segment and here is the related activity.

As you cover Teilifis this week, you might enjoy this segment on that topic and this activity too.

5th Class
5th Class have recently studied The Renaissance and so you might be interested in watching Home School Hub on Thursday when they cover it too.

6th Class
As you focus on Aimsir this week, Home School Hub are covering Samhradh on Wednesday. I'd say it will be useful for you. Also, as you focus on the natural environment, this episode may be interesting to you.

Cula4 is on TG4 each weekday at 10am.
The School Hub
is on RTE2 each weekday at 11am.

Here are the episodes that you might like to watch this week.

All classes
Home School Hub are focusing on film studies this week. We cover this during Learn Together time. It should be interesting to watch this week. They are covering it on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hope you enjoy it!

We also encourage you to watch Cula4. It is a great way of improving your Gaeilge. You are not expected to understand even half of what is being said. Just try to catch ONE WORD in the whole programme. Once you have watched a few episodes, try to catch two. the more you watch, the easier Gaeilge will become for you (parents as well as children!)

Senior Infants
You are doing Eadai (clothes) in Gaeilge this week. Home School Hub did a lesson on Eadai and gave an activity for it too. It might be a little hard for you but that's ok. See if you can recognise even one word in it!

1st Class
Home School Hub are doing addition and subtraction on Thursday. It might match well with the Maths you're doing this week!

3rd Class
As you do Caitheamh Aimsire (hobbies) in Gaeilge this week, you might learn even more watching this episode of Home School Hub and try this activity that went with it.

4th Class
Just like you, Home School Hub are doing perimeter in Maths this week! Watch Tuesday's programme to find out what they do.

5th Class
As you study heat this week, you might enjoy this episode about conductors and insulators. Here's an activity to go with it. I wouldn't be worried about the website having it in the 3rd/4th class section. That just means it was shown during the middle part of the show.

Overview of Home School Hub lessons

This document is aimed more at teachers outside of our own school than at parents, though of course parents are welcome to use it too!

This is a spreadsheet we at Citywest ETNS have developed to keep track of the Home School Hub lessons and related activities. Feel free to share the link. We update it each weekend with the links from the last week and the lesson titles for the coming week.

We hope it helps in planning and connecting what families are doing at home with the content Home School Hub are creating!

Cula4 is on TG4 each weekday at 10am.
The School Hub is on RTE2 each weekday at 11am.

Here are the episodes that you might like to watch this week.
Does this list help you? Please let me know so I can decide whether to keep doing it each week. Thanks.

For everyone
On Monday, The School Hub are looking at diabetes. We have some people in our school community who have diabetes so it would be great to have even more who know about it!

On Friday, The School Hub are covering personal hygiene. Especially at the moment, this is a really important topic for everyone!

Across the school, we are covering procedural writing this term. The School Hub looked at procedural writing last week. Here is the activity they suggested.

Here are some extra episodes for particular classes:
Junior Infants
Junior Infants are doing the topic An Teilifis (the television) in Gaeilge this week. What a great week to watch television in Irish! Even having Cula4 on in the background helps get the sounds of the language in your head and will make it easier to learn in the future.

1st Class
As 1st Class look at 3D shape this week, you might enjoy this episode about shape. It might be a little difficult because it was made for children in 3rd and 4th class but maybe you'll learn something new! Here is a bonus shape activity to go with that episode.

4th Class
As you look at the human body this week, you might like to look at this episode of The School Hub. Here is the activity they have for it.

If you missed the episode on Eadai two weeks ago,
here is the link to it and here is the activity for it.

6th Class
After 2 weeks when I couldn't find any specific episodes to fit what you're doing, there are lots this week for you!

The School Hub is doing poetry for 5th and 6th classes this Wednesday, just like you are doing this week. I hope you enjoy the lesson they do.

Cula4 are focusing on Caitheamh Aimsire this week, just like you too!

Have a great week!

If you haven't watched The Home School Hub or Cula4 up to now, here's a chance to give just one part of an episode a try, one that relates to the activities your teacher has suggested for you this week. We hope this list helps!

For everyone - Well-being
As we celebrate Well-being Fortnight, here are the SPHE lessons that have been on The Home School Hub already. Though they are targeted at particular class levels, they should be fine for a few years either side of that too.

Aimed at 1st/2nd class:
  • Home and My Family - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity
  • Feelings - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity

Aimed at 3rd/4th class:
  • Online safety - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity

Aimed at 5th/6th class:
  • Altrusim - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity
  • Worries and tension - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity
  • Self image - click here to watch the episode and here for the activity

Junior Infants
The Home School Hub is targeted at 1st class up. While Senior Infants could reach up to that, we don't think its fair to expect Junior Infants to. Feel free to watch it, though. Hopefully you will learn something new!

Cula4 is a good programme to watch. Its on TG4 each day at 10am. You're not expected to understand what's being said but listening to the language will help you to learn it more easily when you go back to the school building.

Senior Infants
As Senior Infants go on a mini-beast hunt this week, you might also like to think about the birds in the local natural environment.
Here's an activity you can do about it too.

1st Class

The Home School Hub covered The Children of Lir just last week! Watch the episode here and try the activity here.

2nd and 4th Classes
The Home School Hub looked at 2D and 3D shape last week. Watch the episode here and try the activity here.

3rd and 6th Classes
I can't spot any episodes that connect with what you are doing this week. Instead, why don't you take a look at our Book Club page? As you are reading 20-30 minutes a day, you might enjoy some of the quizzes linked there or you could let us know what you're reading and what you think of it. We'd love to hear from you!

5th Class

The Home School Hub covered poetry last week, looking particularly at a type of poem called limericks. Watch the episode here and try the activity here.

Cula4 is on TG4 each weekday at 10am.
The School Hub is on RTE2 each weekday at 11am.

They are designed to help families at home during school closures and we encourage you to give them a try!

Of interest to everyone
Caitriona is particularly excited to see that an Irish Sign Language lesson will feature on The School Hub on Thursday 30th April. They promise to teach you how to sign your name. Maybe you could practice in advance and then teach alongside Laura on the day!

Also on Thursday, Cula4 will be looking at online safety, a topic we hope that all our community are being particularly mindful of these days.

Senior Infants and 2nd Class
Cula4 are focussing on the topic of Money on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, just like you are! Tune in to TG4 at 10am each weekday morning to see what they get up to. Its ok if you don't understand everything they say. If you understand one word each day, that's super! Listening to Irish will help your brain get used to the sounds of the language.

1st Class

When studying length this week, you might like to look back at this episode of The School Hub where they looked at length. If you would like a bonus activity, you could try their suggestion here!

3rd Class
As you think about democracy towards the end of this week, you might like to look back at the very first episode of The School Hub to see their piece about the President of Ireland. It starts at 14 minutes into the recording.

4th Class
4th class will be particularly interested in watching Cula4 this week as the theme of the show this week is Eadai, exactly the topic 4th class are covering! Tune in to TG4 at 10am each weekday morning to see what they get up to. Its ok if you don't understand everything they say. If you understand one word each day, that's super! Listening to the Irish will help your brain to get used to the sounds of the language.

The School Hub are also focussing on Eadai on Monday's episode so you can tune in there too!

5th class
5th class might enjoy looking back at this episode of The School Hub, where they looked at area, in particular the area of a circle. Here is the activity they suggested for those who watch it. Enjoy it!
