1, 2, 3....Understanding ASD!

26/3/2017

This week is Autism Awareness Week at Citywest ETNS!
Picture
Autism, formally known as ASD: Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a condition that is often misunderstood by many, so as a school, we feel it important to shine a light on autism so that all of our community can become that much more knowledgeable about it! This is the second time we have marked the event, with last year seeing the children and staff ‘go blue’ to create a large-scale autism ribbon symbol. This was a very special event for Citywest ETNS as it too marked the opening of our very first special class for children with ASD!
This year, our focus has turned to the various ways in which YOU and YOUR FAMILY can try and understand autism that much better. So, how you could do this? Well, it really is as easy as 1, 2, 3….
  1. Take a look at the information slides below, which have been put together by some teachers in our school who have worked with children with autism. These slides will be presented to all classes in Citywest ETNS on Monday, so feel free to discuss any of the information you read with your child!
  2. Download this fun, and colourful children’s information booklet. There are lots of little activities, stories, and interesting discussion points on autism for you to share with your child.
  3. Keep up with ‘Autism and Me’ on RTE. This is a new series on RTE 1, which documents the experiences of various children in Ireland who have been diagnosed with different forms of autism. It is a great way to see what life in their shoes - or their families’ shoes - is like on the day-to-day.

The Student Council ishappy to introduce 'The Thankful Tree' to our school. The Thankful Tree is an interactive display in the corridoor that promotes positive thinking by encouraging everyone in our school community to write something that they are thankful for on a leave and add it to the tree. So far people are thankful for 'Fridays', 'Engineers visiting our school' , 'Listening to Aoife play the harp' and 'Playing with friends'. Please help us fill the tree by adding your happy and thankful thoughts.

Bí Difriúil Nó Bí Glas

On Thursday March 16th as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge we are inviting everyone to dress different or green. Some fun ideas - wear odd socks and odd shoes, style your hair in a new unusual wear or dress in all green!
